ABOUT THE ARTIST
As a Minnesota native,
MATTHEW NELSON
heard the calling of the mountains. After the death of his mother, Matthew knew he had to answer the call. He sold most of his worldly possessions, left his stressful career and hit the road in an RV looking to feed his soul. He pointed the RV West and let the universe guide him. After living nomadically he stumbled upon Steamboat Springs, Colorado and knew he had found something special.
Matthew always had an artist’s eye but was reluctant to pursue art as a profession. As a boy he would take random scraps of wood and make useful things – a gun rack, a footstool, benches and tables. He has an architecture background and obtained his degree in construction management but after years of the grind he determined that was not for him. His innate urge to create he knew as a boy finally emerged one summer day as he was standing chest deep in a construction dumpster. Building big mountain estates, like those dotting the landscape in Steamboat, produces large quantities of unique scrap wood. It’s from these scraps that he finds inspiration. Once inspired by his new surroundings he finally found an outlet for his creativity.
Away from work, Matthew enjoys all things outdoors, hockey, stacking rocks, and cooking.
